Hardman Street, Bombed Out Church, Renshaw Street & More
If you want a night out that feels authentic, look no further. This district is a favourite for students, musicians, and locals who prefer a leather jacket over a suit. Centred around the iconic St Luke’s (The Bombed Out Church), this area is the bridge between the neon lights of the city centre and the grand, leafy streets of the university district.
Some of the best bars in this area aren’t actually on the main road—they are tucked away down cobbled side streets and require a bit of local knowledge to find:
The Pilgrim (Pilgrim Street): A true Liverpool rite of passage. Famous for its incredibly cheap pints, tiered seating, and a basement vibe that has hosted generations of students and artists.
Ye Cracke (Rice Street): Located just off Hope Street, this was a favourite haunt of John Lennon. It features one of the best “hidden” beer gardens in the city and feels like a country pub dropped into the city centre.
The Scholar: Tucked away on a side street, this is a sanctuary for those who want a laid-back atmosphere, great music, and a break from the more frantic bars on the main drag.
Hardman Street and Renshaw Street is lined with institutions that have stood the test of time, offering a mix of student-friendly lively spots and “proper” award-winning pubs.
The Grapes: Not to be confused with the one on Mathew Street. This is a bohemian, jazz-loving pub with a legendary atmosphere, a famous “secret” beer garden, and a massive selection of rums.
The Fly: Occupying a stunning former bakery, “The Fly” is all about high ceilings and excellent beer. It’s a sophisticated spot for a pint of Okell’s while watching the world go by on Hardman Street.
The Flute: A staple of the student and match-day crowd. It’s loud, friendly, and famous for its “Yellow Card” deals and wall-to-wall sports coverage.
The Dispensary: A multi-award-winning CAMRA pub on the corner of Renshaw Street. It’s a masterclass in the “traditional” Liverpool pub—no frills, just exceptional cask ale and a loyal local following.
Beer Engine: A relatively newer addition that has quickly become a favourite for those who want a massive range of craft beers and a laid-back, industrial vibe.
Starting at the bottom of the hill near the iconic Bombed Out Church (St Luke’s), Renshaw Street sets the tone for the area:
The Dispensary: A multi-award-winning CAMRA pub on the corner. This is a masterclass in the “traditional” Liverpool pub—no frills, just exceptional cask ale.
Danny Mac’s Tavern: A welcoming, Irish-influenced pub that brings a bit of character and a great Guinness to the lower end of the street.
Gravity is Your Friend: Locals usually start at the top (Hardman Street/Hope Street) and work their way down the hill toward Renshaw Street. It’s much easier on the legs after a few pints!
The Alternative Edge: This is the best area for fans of rock, indie, and alternative music. If you want a break from the “top 40” hits playing elsewhere in the city, the jukeboxes here will be your sanctuary.
The Academic Hub: Because it sits between the University of Liverpool and LJMU, expect a younger, more eclectic crowd during term time.
