Hanover Street and nearby areas
This is one of the busiest stretches in the city, acting as the primary link between the Liverpool ONE shopping district and the independent scene of the Ropewalks. It’s a high-energy area dominated by large-scale venues, grand architecture, and some of the most popular social hubs in Liverpool.
Hanover Street is lined with big-name favourites that keep the city moving from afternoon drinks to late-night cocktails:
Albert’s Schenke: A massive, Alpine-influenced Bier Halle. It’s the place for steins, pilsner, and a lively, communal atmosphere that feels world’s away from the high street outside.
Head of Steam: A must-visit for craft beer and cask ale fans. It’s a large, welcoming space with an incredible selection of local and international brews. Try the Krušovice, thank us later.
O’Neill’s: A staple of the city’s Irish bar scene. Known for live music, sports on the big screens, and a reliable, high-energy atmosphere every night of the week.
Tonight Josephine: The place for neon lights and high-energy cocktails. It’s a popular “destination” spot for groups looking for a big night out.
Just a few steps off the main road, the vibe shifts as you enter the square and the bottom end of Duke Street:
Dicey Reilly’s: Located in Wolstenholme Square, this is a modern, polished take on the Irish sports bar. It’s built for big crowds, great Guinness, and a top-tier viewing experience for live games.
The Brunch & Cocktail Club (Duke Street): A Liverpool favourite that transitions perfectly from a high-quality breakfast spot into a cool, relaxed cocktail bar as the evening draws in.
The Bridewell (Campbell Square): Located just off Duke Street, this is a “must-visit.” It’s a Grade II listed former police station and jail. Drinking in the original converted cells gives it a unique, historic atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else in the city.
This area is the ultimate transition zone. If you’re coming from the Albert Dock or Liverpool ONE, this is where the “real” night out begins.
The Bridewell Tip: If the main bars on Hanover Street are too loud for you, head around the corner to Campbell Square. The Bridewell offers a much more intimate, historic vibe without losing any of the city-centre energy.
Proximity: You are perfectly placed here to jump into the Ropewalks (Seel Street) or head back toward Central Station in just a couple of minutes.
